Fiction Issue 1
Welcome to the fiction section of Pig in a Poke. We have added the extra dimension of fiction to what was formerly primarily a poetry magazine. This issue features seven outstanding short stories. They are all different and vary in genre, but the quality is stellar in all.
I asked Anne Woodman to submit her story "Cherries in the Snow." I had read it in 2007 when it was a finalist in the N.C. State Short Story Contest. I am honored to publish it here. It will touch anyone who has dealt with the death of a parent. Her conversational humor is a pleasure to read.
Daniel Davis's moving tale of race is told from the point of view of a young boy. And Burgess Needle captures the coming of age of a young man in a unique way--the message is timeless. Marge Petesch's story will resonate with anyone who has survived a blind date. And the humorous aspects of the stories by James Neenan and Ginny Swart will have you laughing out loud. Sharmagne Leland-St. John's short story could have been placed as a prose poetry piece. Her style reminds me of Dylan Thomas.
I am happy to be able to publish such quality fiction in the new Pig.
